The power is already in the community's hands, not really sure why people act like something new needs to be created. ShieldBattery already adds features and fixes bugs on the existing game client, with no real dependency on Blizzard's servers (outside of them verifying that you've purchased whatever graphics/sounds/interface that you're trying to use, which even a full reimplementation of the client would need to do). There is an open source project around BW (OpenBW) but afaik it probably wouldn't hold up if they threatened that project. This can only be changed when outside of a game. Blizzard is celebrating the 20th Anniversary of StarCraft, which turns 20 on March 31st of this year, in style, with in-game giveaways and a series of streams. Its a bit confusing since there is a Remastered Console in SCII that you can still get (which is just the three SCR consoles in SCII) but its not the same thing in SCR. The PR hit is apparently worth it, because it gets people to move to sequels. Additionally, log in between March 6 and April 3 to receive a Portrait and Decal. They weren't really taking care of the game prior to remastered, either (pain to even set it up, needed dodgy launchers on >Windows XP, lots of modern routers refused to work even with port forwarding), and there's more and more precedent for companies just turning off servers (eg: ) that even singleplayer games are unplayable. On March 31, the original StarCraft is turning 20 years old, and developer Blizzard Entertainment is celebrating the occasion by treating fans of its games with in-game giveaways and a series of streams.
